WHY COURT RULES ON DISK?
____________________________
Thank you for trying this software. Well, here are some GOOD REASONS TO
USE THIS SOFTWARE AND TO REGISTER:
(1) You'll never again have to type (or dictate) in the text of FRCP 23
in a memo or paper. Presto, pull it into your word processor!
(2) This is MUCH better than a "paper" edition of these items. It takes
much less space. Try reading the bankruptcy code in a book without
flipping back and forth to section 101. We've solved that problem,
allowing you to toggle back and forth between the definitions of the
terms in the code and the code itself!
(3) This program is much less expensive than buying paper books of the
same materials, and it weighs about 5 pounds less!
(4) When preparing pleadings you can more liberally annotate them,
perhaps in foot notes. The Court and opposing counsel (and your
clients/professors) will be impressed with being able to see the text of
the rules or statutes which you are quoting or debating. Nope, they won't
have to get up and get the book or rely on the faulty memory of what is
in the statute. You can show them in black letter law what's what.
(5) For all of us work-a-holics you don't need to lug heavy books home or
on the plane. Just take the disk or your lap top with the information
that you need.
SYSTEMS REQUIREMENTS______________________________________________
To use this software you must have an IBM compatible computer with DOS
version 3.3 or higher and 512k of available memory.
A hard disk with at least 3 megs of free space is required for the d
version, although less than a full install can be made by the user which
will take less space. This shareware edition requires approximately 360kb
free disk space. (The text of the statutes ready for word processing
requires approximately 9 megs of storage.)
A printer is required if a user wishes to print out items.
This program contains all of the features of the Court Rules Service 2.0;
Hypertext Guide and is not crippled. However, since the registered
program requires multiple megabytes of space, and would be impossibily
long to download, we have include a "sampler" of the data in this
edition.
INSTALLATION_____________________________________________________
A batch file is provided for installation from a floppy drive to either
drives C: or D:. In any other case, please read the directions from the
file "install.txt." The registered program includes a full installation
program.
Running the program:
If you want to use your mouse, be sure that your mouse driver is
installed. To begin use of the program, change to the /COURT
subdirectory, or, to the directory where you chose to install COURT
RULES.
You always begin the program by entering:
COURTRUL
you may then select from the main menu the statute/rule or informtion
which you desire to use.
SYSTEM OPTIONS__________________________________________________
Most users can operate the Court Rules Service without any changes to the
default settlings. Court Rules Service uses "Dart," a hypertext program,
to display the hypertext versions of the statutes, regulations and other
information. In order to use the options you will have to creat a
straight ASCII file called DART.SYS in the /COURT subdirectory. You may
use any word processor in "ascii" mode to do this, or, you may launch
Dart, open a new file from the file menu and use the Dart editor to
create or modify the DART.SYS file. Please place the DART.SYS file in the
/COURT subdirectory or the subdirectory where you are operating this
program if named differently.
Dart allows you to set the following options:
/BW=YES
Black and White- forces black and white operation;
/HIRES=YES
Use 43/50 line operation on EGA/VGA;
/SNOW=YES
If you have a CGA monitor and you get static or "snow" when using Court
Rules Service this parameter forces a CGA display that eliminates snow;
/MONO=YES
Monochrome- forces monochrome operation;
/MENUBAR=NO
Hides the menu bar except when it is in use.
Here is an example DART.SYS file for monochrome operation and for display
without the menubar except when it it is in use:
/MENUBAR=NO
/MONO=YES
Again, we want to stress that the "default" settings should work for
almost all users.
USE OF COURT RULES_______________________________________________
We hope that users will find Court Rules Service to be simple to
use. You will probably find that using the hypertext reader to
read the on line help file will be the easiest way to learn to
use the program. If you are familiar with "Windowed" application
it's a snap. Repeat: the best way to learn how to use this
service is to use the program!
After a quick briefing (below) we suggest that you use the program to
read the on line help file and to learn about all the features of the
program.
After selecting a file using either the mouse or tab keys, you will see a
statute or court rules displayed.
Here's an example screen from Chapter 9 of the U.S. Bankruptcy
Code:
_____________________________________________________________
925
(11 U.S.C. 925)
925. Effect of list of claims. A proof of claim is deemed filed
under section 501 of this title for any claim that appears in the
list filed under section 924* of this title, except a claim that
is listed as disputed, contingent, or unliquidated.
<5b.#cr 501>*
_____________________________________________________________
Since this manual is just text, we'll have to do some describing.
The first line, 925, is alone on a line and is displayed in bold
on screen. This is a hyperlink label.
924* is a hyperlink mark. By moving the mouse cursor, or regular
cursor keys to 924* in the reader, you can then either double
left click with the mouse or tap the ENTER key, and Court Rules
will move you immediately to that hyperlink label.
The backspace key takes you back to the prior label and allows you to
"retrace your steps."
The tab key moves to the next link.
Mouse users can click on the bottom menu bar for these choices.
Now you are an expert on the basics, you'll be able to use the on line
hypertext manual which reviews all of the functions on the menus in
detail.
One final word of caution. Most MS-DOS computers when optimally
configured have slightly more than 600kb free memory. In doing multiple
cross references you may open many files at once and even with the
"buffering" that our program uses begin to test the limits of system
memory. On rare instances you may get an "out of memory" message. In this
case, don't panic! The program has not crashed. Just close a file or two
and you will be able to continue.
